In life, we go through so many changes. Things can change each year, month, day and even hour. Sometimes changes can feel good, and sometimes they don’t feel great. They can be exciting or scary, or maybe a little bit of both. Change is a natural part of life, and, as Christians, we can rest in the fact that our God is in full control of every change. He will lead us in the right direction and give us the peace we need to walk through times of change.
One thing that can give us peace during times of change is the fact that God never changes. “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow” (James 1:17). He can be the constant in our lives when everything else is uprooted. We can fully lean on him for strength and courage as we walk through times of uncertainty. We can take comfort in the fact that whatever is changing is a part of God’s great plan for us. “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” (Romans 8:28). Our life may feel like a rollercoaster, but our God can be our constant.
Another thing that can give us peace when things are changing in our lives is that God promises that he will walk with us through everything. He doesn’t promise to take away the change or the painful things, but he does promise that he will give us the peace and strength we need to walk through it.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze” (Isaiah 43:2)
“This is my command - be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9)
No matter where life takes us or what changes we may find ourselves going through, our Lord will be with us every step of the way. He knows that we can get comfortable in our ways, and when changes abound we can struggle to move away from our comfort zone. That’s why he promises to be with us, so that we don’t have to feel as though we are walking these challenging paths alone. If we trust in our Lord and Savior to guide our paths, we can be confident that we are headed in the right direction, to where the Lord has planned for us to be.
Sometimes the Lord asks us to be still, but sometimes the Lord asks us to step out in bold faith when changes (big or small) come our way. Are you facing any big life changes right now? Do you trust that the Lord has it all in his hands and that he is with you every step of the way? If you are not going through any changes, what are you doing in your life right now to set up a solid foundation of faith and prepare for when those trying times come?
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as in live in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
