Everyone wants to have control over their lives. When we feel like our lives are out of our control, we start to get anxious and fearful. We try so hard to keep everything under control and work out what we think is the best thing for ourselves. We all want to direct our lives on the course that we think is perfect for us. Doesn’t it get tiring after a while? Trying to control all of the different variables and make all the right decisions?
Thankfully, there is a solution to all of this that does not involve us having the control of our lives, or anything for that matter. There are some things in life that we can and are expected to control. For example, making good financial decisions or how we respond to our spouse when we have a disagreement. Then there are the things that are out of our control, and things we could never see coming. We can take heart that our God has every single thing in existence under his control. We have the freedom to surrender all of the unknowns to God and receive his peace as a result. “The Lord has made the heavens his throne; from there he rules over everything” (Psalm 103:19). That means that he is always working out everything for good. “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” (Romans 8:28).
It is truly freeing to know that for the things we can’t control, there is a good and loving God who has full control over them. That does not mean that things will always be perfect, and Christ tells us that. However, he follows with an encouragement for us: “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). With Christ in full control over the world, we can trust that the things that are out of our control are not all together out of control. We can fully trust that God has his hand over every situation, even if it does not feel like it at the time. God is always working, and even when we can’t see it, we can trust that he is there, and always has full control.
Are you still trying to keep everything under control? Are you still working hard to control everything in your life? Be moved by the sovereignty of our Lord and Savior, and trust that he has to control over all things. Surrender to him all that you have been holding on to, and allow his peace to wash over you today.
