When I think of someone being rescued, I usually associate it with a dangerous situation that someone could not get out of on their own. For example, firefighters are usually called “Fire Rescue” because they are trained and equipped to save people from a burning building, and then are able to put out the fire. When we call 911 for a fire emergency, the firefighters are ready to jump into action to do what they have been trained to do, and they are ready to do it immediately. There is no hesitation - if someone needs them, they are prepared to do whatever it takes to rescue whoever is in danger.
We need to be spiritually rescued. The state of our souls before Jesus is exactly the way I described above - a dangerous situation that someone could not get out of on their own. There is no way that we could have rescued ourselves. We are literally incapable. That is exactly why Jesus needed to be born as a baby, live a perfectly sinless life, and then die on the cross. Just as we are literally incapable of rescuing ourselves, we are literally incapable of living that sinless life to satisfy God. Jesus took on that impossible task for us, and offers us the rescue we so desperately need. “And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us” (2 Corinthians 1:10). We are sinking without him; we are living in that burning building. Jesus is equipped and prepared to run right in and pull you out. He is always right there ready to rescue us, we just need to call out to him, and he is ready to jump into action.
In your life right now, do you feel like you’re drowning and just can’t seem to catch a break? Let Jesus rescue you. His hand is always reaching out to take hold of you, all you need to do is take hold of it. Run to the ultimate Rescuer.
“Then I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be glad because he rescues me” (Psalms 35:9)
