I am sure all of us have felt completely unworthy at one point or another in our lives. We feel like we can’t measure up to the expectations other put on us (whether they are real or not) or the expectations we put on ourselves. We feel that the things we have done or said in the past make us unworthy of anyone’s love, but especially God’s. But I am here to tell you today that because God loved you so much, he sent his Son to die on the cross for you, and that alone makes you fully and completely worthy in the eyes of our Lord.
My inspiration for writing this post came from a Youth Group Girls event I helped with last week. One of my dear friends is a Youth leader, and they were looking for another young woman to help with the outing. I was excited to go and help out, and spend some time with my friend, the other leaders, and the young girls at our church. My friend who invited me was the one charged with writing the devotional for that event, and she talked about how our worth is found in Christ. I thought she did such a fantastic job, that I wanted to go forward and write my own piece on worth, because I think it is such an important topic.
One of the things she talked about is the difference between value and worth. Webster’s dictionary defines them both as this:
Value: the monetary worth of something
Worth: a moral or personal value
She made an important distinction between the two, and I want to do the same. Value is pretty standard across the board, something is or is not valuable. Society as a whole is usually what determines if something has value or not. But worth is something more personal, each person views worth differently. Something that is of worth to you, may not be in the eyes of another. Each person has specific things that are of worth to them. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! And that’s how Christ views us - what might seem like trash to the world, Christ sees as his treasure.
Christ views us as completely worthy of his sacrifice. “But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because if our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead (it is only by God’s grace you have been saved!)” (Ephesians 2: 4-5). His love for us was so strong, that he came down to earth to suffer and die so that we wouldn’t have to, and so that our relationship with him would be restored. That alone shows how much worth God places on you. God calls us his masterpiece, and if you have something you consider a masterpiece, I am sure that it has great worth for you! “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10).
I hope that you joy fills your heart as you reflect on how much worth God finds in you. You are special and unique, and there is no one else like you in the whole world. No matter what anyone else says or does, God always sees you as his magnificent creation, that he bled and died to save. He knows you by name. “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid our before a single day had passed” (Psalm 139:16). Don’t let the beauty of that be lost on you. Rejoice in it today!
